The World Geography of Wealth: Why 95% of UHNWIs Live in the Northern Hemisphere

North America, Asia and Europe hold 91.7% of the world's UHNWI population. Here's how global wealth is really distributed in 2026.

95.1% of the world's UHNWI population and 95.2% of the related wealth are concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere, according to Altrata data collected in my HNWI Trends 2026. Three regions — North America (40.7%), Asia (25.3%) and Europe (25.7%) — together hold 91.7% of the 510,810 UHNWIs counted globally as of mid-2025.

A concentration that has multiplied sevenfold. From 2004 to 2025, the number of UHNWIs worldwide rose from 77,500 to 510,810 — growth seven times faster than the global adult population over the same period. The United States remains the single dominant market with 192,470 UHNWIs (+21.2%), more than the combined total of the other nine countries in the global top ten, Italy among them with 11,950 (+6%).

What it means for an Italian advisor. If nearly three-quarters of the world's UHNWI population lives in ten countries, and Italy is one of them, it follows that most of the capital genuinely available to Italy's ultra-prime market doesn't originate in Italy: it comes predominantly from North America and, increasingly, from emerging markets like India and Saudi Arabia. Building direct relationships with these pools is the difference between capturing global capital and watching it flow elsewhere.

Key takeaways

95.1% of the world's UHNWI population concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere; UHNWI growth seven times faster than the global adult population since 2004; capital available to the Italian ultra-prime market predominantly originates outside national borders.
